When we can help
- A relative is detained or arrested in mainland China and the family needs to appoint counsel.
- A case is at the prosecution or trial stage and requires a defence assessment.
- Business, investment or shareholder disputes involve criminal allegations.
- Existing representation needs to be clarified before a change of counsel or a coordinated engagement.
What the mandate may cover
- Clarify whether a family member can appoint counsel and what identity, relationship and authority documents are required.
- After engagement, arrange lawyer visits in accordance with applicable procedures.
- Assess and, where appropriate and agreed, apply for release pending trial (qubao houshen) or a review of the need for continued detention.
- Review the case materials available at the relevant stage, prepare defence submissions or represent the defendant at trial.
- Identify the responsible lawyer, family contact and agreed scope and timing of updates.
What to prepare
- The mainland location, known investigating authority and brief description of the allegation.
- When the family learned of detention or other proceedings, and any urgent dates.
- Your relationship to the person concerned and details of any existing legal representation.
- After a conflict check, provide notices and identity or relationship documents through the agreed channel.
Before you begin
Can I make contact while outside China?
Yes. Begin with a brief outline. Whether you can appoint counsel for a relative, and the formalities required, depend on your relationship, identity and the stage of the case.
Can you guarantee release or a particular outcome?
No. Lawyer visits, applications and submissions are professional work. Decisions on release, prosecution and judgment are made by the relevant authorities.
Will Chi Jianwei personally carry out every task?
The engagement identifies the lead lawyer, the lawyers doing the work and Chi Jianwei’s role. Intake, document organisation and progress tracking are shared within the team.
Will the family receive every detail discussed with the client?
The client’s wishes, confidentiality obligations and case requirements determine what may be shared. The reporting arrangements are agreed at the outset.
Is the enquiry form an emergency service?
No. Saving an enquiry does not mean a lawyer has accepted instructions. Obtain express confirmation of representation where urgent action is required.
