Chi Jianwei has nearly twenty years of experience in legal work, with a longstanding practice in commercial and financial disputes, real estate and construction disputes, and criminal defence. His work covers debt recovery, defence of debt claims, contract disputes, property ownership and sale disputes, construction payment claims, shareholder and investment disputes, criminal defence and assistance with criminal complaints, as well as appeals, retrials, enforcement and proceedings challenging enforcement.
He has handled a substantial volume of litigation and has worked extensively in real estate, distressed assets and dispute resolution. His experience includes multiple matters before the Supreme People’s Court and provincial High People’s Courts, with successful reversals in a number of appeals and retrials, including cases in which he was first instructed at the Supreme People’s Court stage. His approach brings together evidence, litigation strategy, asset disposal and the practical prospects of enforcement, with particular attention to issues involving both civil and criminal proceedings.
For clients overseas
Mainland China legal matters and related cross-border disputes.
Chi Jianwei leads a team assisting Chinese clients who live primarily overseas, foreign investors and overseas organisations with unpaid receivables, liabilities, property and investment disputes in mainland China. Fujian is the team’s principal area of local experience; matters elsewhere in mainland China are also handled according to the needs of each case.
Work includes debt recovery, responding to claims, property ownership and sale disputes, shareholder and investment-exit disputes, judgment enforcement and challenges to enforcement. Clients may instruct the team on a defined task or agree a staged mandate covering negotiation, litigation and enforcement.
The service addresses practical questions: which steps can proceed remotely, what evidence is needed, whether assets can be disposed of or recovered, and the costs and risks of the available routes. For related cross-border disputes, the mainland China scope is defined and the team works with professional advisers in the client’s location or other relevant jurisdictions where needed.
For mainland criminal matters, the team helps parties overseas and family members abroad arrange criminal defence representation, and provides legal assistance with criminal complaints as appropriate to the matter.
Representative experience
Successful appeals and retrials, including before the Supreme People’s Court and provincial High People’s Courts
Chi has intervened in multiple separate matters before the Supreme People’s Court, provincial High People’s Courts and appellate courts and obtained reversals of earlier decisions. His enforcement-objection litigation has involved financial institutions, purchasers of commercial residential property, other creditors and distressed asset portfolios. In one representative matter, he was first instructed at the Supreme People’s Court retrial stage; the court ultimately set aside the first- and second-instance judgments and reversed the adverse outcome.
Property ownership, setting aside transfers and protecting creditors
He has handled multiple disputes concerning property ownership, resale transactions and creditor protection. Results include setting aside transactions and securing the return of homes in a series of cases involving sales through impersonation and fraudulent notarisation; setting aside malicious property transfers; and numerous successful cases involving new-build and resale housing.
Construction payment recovery, distressed assets and enforcement
His longstanding work in construction payment claims, distressed asset resolution and complex enforcement includes extensive experience across mainland China. Examples include disputes over the unfinished Zhaosu thermal power plant project in Xinjiang, a series of Shandong expressway construction disputes, and helping an actual construction contractor recover the full construction payment despite the main contractor’s bankruptcy, alongside other substantial construction disputes.
Shareholder, investment and financial disputes
He has handled multiple shareholder, corporate control, financial lending and investment disputes, including the validity of resolutions expelling shareholders, securities fraud liability and entrusted investment-management contracts involving private funds. His analysis combines the transaction structure, corporate governance and potential criminal exposure.
Criminal defence and related civil disputes
His longstanding criminal defence and criminal-complaint work includes cases resulting in decisions not to prosecute and suspended sentences. He has defended economic crime cases involving time spent overseas, return to mainland China and recognition of voluntary surrender, with attention to the distinction between commercial disputes, financial dealings and criminal liability, and the interaction between procedures.

How the team handles your matter
Lawyers and support staff are assigned according to the type and needs of the matter. The engagement identifies the scope, responsible person, fees and communication arrangements. Support staff assist with document organisation, communication and progress tracking; practising lawyers remain responsible for legal analysis and case handling.
Chi Jianwei’s personal involvement is determined by the agreed engagement plan. Remote communication, document submission and steps requiring the client’s direct participation are addressed for each case.
Legal instructions are formally accepted by the law firm at which the responsible lawyers practise.
